Palace says gov t enhancing readiness against any terror attack

Malacañang said Thursday that the government is intensifying its readiness against a possible terror attack, amid an advisory from the Japanese government.

“Nagpapasalamat tayo sa impormasyon, pero lalo nating pinaiigting ang ating kahandaan para harapin ang posibleng terroristic attack muli [We thank them for the information, and we are strengthening our preparedness for a possible terror attack],” Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said.

Japan had earlier issued a travel warning to its citizens, saying that it obtained information about possible suicide bombings in six Southeast Asian countries, including the Philippines. It urged them to be wary of crowds and visiting religious sites and “Western-owned” establishments.

The Japanese Embassy in Manila later confirmed its government’s receipt of such information, but said it could not currently give any “detailed background” on the matter.

The Department of National Defense said that it is working to validate the information, while the military and police forces said they have not monitored any terror threat.

“The police and military are prepared, but we also need the cooperation of the public so we encourage them to report anything suspicious, especially in public places,” Roque said.

“We have been on heightened alert since Marawi,” he also said.

The five-month-long battle for the Islamic City of Marawi in 2017, which saw clashes between terrorist group Maute and government forces from May to October 2017, resulted in the city’s devastation and the loss of life. — BM, GMA News
