Math teacher in Lapu-Lapu City sells gowns to help 200 students

A math teacher on Olango Island in Lapu Lapu City, Cebu sold gowns to help provide school supplies for his 200 students, according to Saleema Refran’s report on “24 Oras Weekend.”

“’Yung mga student ko kasi palaging nag cha-chat sa GC na, sir wala po kaming school supplies, wala po kaming anuhan ng ballpen atsaka notebooks,” Robinson “Tito V. Opaw” Daño said.

[My students keep telling me that they have no school supplies, such as ball pens and notebooks.]

Daño has been helping poor students for nine years.

However, when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, the movement of his contacts in non-government organizations (NGOs) became limited.

Out of worry for his students, Daño figured out a way to help them by selling gowns.

“May kaibigan po ako na nag-sponsor ng mga gown. I decided na ibebenta ko na lang. The proceeds is ibibili ko ng school supplies. Hindi lang gowns ang itinitinda ko, nag titinda din ako ng lumpia,” he said.

[I had a friend who sponsored the gowns. I decided that I would sell them and the proceeds will be used to buy school supplies. I don’t only sell gowns. I also sell lumpia.]

He would then hand out the procured school supplies to parents during meetings.

Daño said he had experienced what it was like to go to school without supplies.

“Nung high school po ako, nahihirapan din ako sa pag-aaral. Kaya sabi ko sa sarili ko pagdating ng panahon pagmakaluwag ako, babawi ako sa aking students,” he said.

[When I was in high school, I had a hard time studying with the lack of school supplies. I told myself then that I would help poor students when my life gets a little better.]

“Ang hirap talaga before, minsan wala akong notebook,” he added.

[It was really hard for me then. Sometimes I couldn’t even afford to buy notebooks.]

As the effects of the pandemic began to bite hard on his students, Daño started helping his students, and he said that his giving of school supplies was only a small thing as a second parent to the children. —LBG, GMA News
