
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Philippine Army and the local government of a municipality in Bukidnon on Tuesday turned over the cremated remains of Communist Party of the Philippines leader Jorge Madlos (Ka Oris) to his family.
The turnover was coordinated by the local government of the municipality of Impasugong with the 4th Infantry (Diamond) Division of the Philippine Army.
Impasugong Mayor Anthony A. Uy formally turned over the cremated remains of Ka Oris to his younger brother Rito Madlos in a simple ceremony held at the Municipal Hall.
The ceremony was witnessed by local government employees and personnel of the Philippine Army’s 8th Infantry Battalion of the 403rd Infantry Brigade, 4ID and personnel from Impasugong Municipal Police Station.
Ka Oris and his aide Eighfel Dela Peña alias Pika/Maui died following an encounter with government troops in Bukidnon on Saturday, October 30.
The Philippine Army’s 4th Infantry Division said the encounter took place in a mountainous area in Barangay Dumalaguing, Impasugong town around 11:30 a.m.
Rito Madlos, who traveled from Surigao City early dawn on Tuesday, was designated by the surviving Madlos siblings to claim their brother’s cremated remains.
A Mass was held right before the turnover. The local government also gave cash assistance to the Madlos family.
Uy expressed condolences to Ka Oris’ family, saying that people make their own choices in life and deserve to be prayed for when they pass away.
The mayor also said the LGU of Impasugong and the Philippine Army and the Philippine National Police endeavored to provide a decent and appropriate final resting place for the remains of Ka Oris.
Rito Madlos responded and thanked the LGU and the Army for their proper treatment and welcome as well as for facilitating the turnover of Ka Oris’ cremated remains.
Rito said the last time he saw Ka Oris was in 2014. He said he had mixed emotions when his brother died.
“We already offered his life to the God Almighty. His time is up. We cannot deny that he is a fugitive. I say this in fairness to everyone, in fairness to your service, pasalamat ako gihapon kay luyo sa iyang pagka-fugitive, inyu gihatagan sya ug serbisyo na di nakita sa among pamliya. On behalf of Madlos family of Surigao del Norte and so with my family affiliates in Surigao, I am very thankful to all these efforts that you showed to us, salamat salamat kaayu ninyo,” Rito said.
The LGU also facilitated the processing and release of Ka Oris’ death certificate.
Meanwhile, Uy also led the turnover of the cremated remains of Eighfel Dela Peña to her mother Normelita Dela Peña.
The turnover was held at the mayor’s office on Monday, November 8.
Eighfel’s cremated remains were brought to her hometown in San Luis, Agusan del Sur. The LGU of Impasugong also provided cash assistance and two sacks of rice to her family.
In a statement, the Army’s 4ID commander Major General Romeo Brawner Jr. thanked the LGU of Impasugong for extending support and assistance.
Brawner said with the turnover of the cremated remains of Ka Oris and Eighfel to their respective families, it is hoped it will put closure to issues surrounding their deaths. —KG, GMA News
