The delay in settling unpaid claims to private hospitals is partly due to the IT system of the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth), Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said Tuesday.
At the Laging Handa briefing, Duque said the agency has enough funds to pay for the supposed claims.
Duque is also an ex-officio chairman of PhilHealth.
“Nagkakaroon ng delayed imbursements. One of the more common reasons is ‘yung IT system ng PhilHealth medyo talagang kinakailangan pa paunlarin. Kailangan mag-invest pa sa IT capacity o capability ng PhilHealth,” he said.

Last week, PhilHealth Corporate Communications Senior Manager Rey Balena said the unpaid claims are expected to be settled before December as hospitals consider cutting ties with the agency.
According to Duque, the agency has a 100 million membership base.
“So ‘yan ang patuloy na tinutugunan po ng inyong PhilHealth batay sa aking paguusap with President Dante Gierran. At siya naman ay patuloy na nakikipag dialogo sa mga… Private Hospital Association of the Philippines,” he said.
(So PhilHealth is continuously monitoring this… President Dante Gierran is also in talks with the Private Hospital Association of the Philippines.)
“Pero ginagawa po ng PhilHealth ang lahat ng kanyang makakaya na makapag bayad po kung kumpleto ang dokumento at may malinaw na batayan, legal basis for releasing such funds,” he added.
