QC turns city pound into pet adoption center

An adoption center for impounded and neglected animals was established in Quezon City on Monday.

Through the city’s Animal Welfare and Rehabilitation Program, the current 450-square meter city pound in Payatas will be transformed into a pet adoption center that can shelter up to 60 animals.

Rehabilitation and training services will be provided before opening animals up for adoption.

“Captured dogs and cats not claimed by their owners for at least three days will be up for adoption. With the help of the City Council, we are currently creating the homing and adoption policy for them,” City Veterinarian Dr. Ana Marie Cabel said.

The adoption center will also have surgery rooms for animals in need of medical attention.

The first ever comprehensive approach in animal rehabilitation was the city’s solution to avoid future animal euthanasia.

As part of the program, pet-friendly spaces in public areas will be created as well.

“The city believes that every animal deserves a loving and caring family,” Mayor Joy Belmonte said.

According to a report by the City Veterinary Department (QCVD), around 9, 600 animals are captured yearly while the current adoption rate is only less than one percent. — Jiselle Anne Casucian/LA, GMA News
