
The death toll due to the inclement weather since January 2 climbed to 27, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Sunday.
Based on its latest situational report, the NDRRMC said eight fatalities were reported in Zamboanga Peninsula, seven in Northern Mindanao, six in Eastern Visayas, five in Bicol Region, and one in the Davao Region.
However, only 14 of the reported deaths were confirmed.
Three people were also reported missing, while 11 were reported injured.
A total of 614,159 individuals or 151,365 families were affected in Cagayan, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao, Soccsksargen, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
Of the affected population, 83,649 people or 20,056 families were staying in 217 evacuation centers, while 28,847 individuals or 11,519 families were taking shelter in other places.
The NDRRMC said the regions with the most flooded areas were Eastern Visayas, Western Visayas, and Zamboanga Peninsula.
At least 279 areas are still flooded.
A total of 45 landslide incidents were recorded due to inclement weather while at least 1,281 houses were reported damaged — 912 partially and 369 totally.
Damage to agriculture was valued at P258,372,690.9 while infrastructure damage was pegged at P171,430,996. The National Irrigation Administration reported P25,610,000 worth of damage.
A state of calamity was also declared in San Miguel, Leyte; Eastern Samar; Calbayog City, Gandara, San Jorge and Basey, Samar; Tubod, Lanao del Norte; and General Luna, Surigao del Norte.
Earlier in the day, PAGASA said the low-pressure area (LPA) northeast of Surigao del Norte would cause cloudy skies with scattered to widespread rain showers and thunderstorms over the Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, and Quezon.
Metro Manila, Mindanao, the rest of Visayas, Mimaropa, the rest of Calabarzon, and Aurora will have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms also due to the LPA.
Meanwhile, the rest of Luzon will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to localized thunderstorms.
At 3 a.m. on Sunday, the LPA was estimated to be located 80 kilometers northeast of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, or 125 kilometers east of Maasin City, Southern Leyte. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
