PCG rescues 3 fishermen from distressed motorbanca off Benham Rise

Three fishermen were rescued from a distressed motorbanca off the Benham Rise, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Saturday.

In an incident report, the rescued fishermen were identified as Romeo Bernardo, 59, Freddie Lubiano, 54, and Glen Lopez, 44.

They were onboard the distressed motorbanca F/BCA Benedecto Uno, which was found floating 50 nautical miles northeast of Pandan, Catanduanes on Wednesday.

The PCG, citing boat captain Lubiano, said the fishermen had engine trouble while headed back to Barangay Napo, Pandan after a fishing venture off the Benham Rise.

Initial investigation revealed that the motorbanca’a engine conked out because salt, through seawater, had gotten into their fuel.

The Coast Guard said it took four hours of search and rescue operations to locate the missing fishermen.

The rescue team towed the distressed boat to the shoreline of Barangay Del Norte, Pandan, Catanduanes for repairs.

The three fishermen were also transported to their respective families in Barangay Napo. — DVM, GMA News
