Metro mayors to decide travel restrictions for unvaccinated younger kids -DILG

Mayors in Metro Manila will meet to decide whether to impose travel restrictions on younger children who have yet to be vaccinated against COVID-19, Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said Sunday.

In an interview with Dobol B TV, Año said he was informed by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Benhur Abalos Jr. that mayors would tackle the issue after a 2-year-old boy tested positive for COVID-19 in a rapid antigen test. The boy had just visited a mall.

Abalos joins meetings of the Metro Manila Council, the policy-making body of the MMDA.

“Kahapon, nagkausap kami ni Chairman Benhur, at napagusapan namin ito at sa pulong na ginagawa ng mayors isa sa kanilang tatalakayin para makita na kailangan bang magkaroon ng restrictions sa younger kids,” said Año.

(Yesterday, Chairman Benhur and I talked about it and the mayors will meet next time to tackle the restriction for younger kids.)

“We have to confirm also with pediatric experts. Nasa authority naman ng LGUs (local government units) na mag-impose ng restrictions kung kinakailangan,” he added.

Año said they were also investigating the report of the 2-year-old boy in case the test was a false positive.

“Too early to make conclusions pero maganda na pinag-aaralan natin (but it would be better if we studied the matter),” he pointed out.

The Department of Health had assured the public that the case of the 2-year-old boy would not affect the Alert Level 2 placed in the metropolis. — DVM, GMA News
