Former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said Monday that he has no regrets working as spokesperson of President Rodrigo Duterte.
Roque had this to say three days after he lost his bid to sit in the International Law Commission, a United Nations body which advises the UN on International Law.
Roque got the least number of votes among 11 contenders from Asia Pacific Region. Before the UN member states voted on who should seat in the ILC, at least 152 Filipino lawyers submitted a letter opposing Roque’s bid, largely because he serves as the spokesperson of President Duterte who has defended the president’s bloody war on drugs which has already killed 7,000 suspects in police operations. The same drug war is now under probe of the International Criminal Court over alleged crimes against humanity as a result of systematic killing of citizens.
“Never po [will I regret working as spokesperson for the President],” Roque, a law professor, human rights lawyer and a party-list lawmaker before being appointed as the President’s mouthpiece, said.
“The President is duly elected by the people, and was given the mandate to rule by the people. The voice of the people is the voice of God,” Roque added.
Roque quit his post on Monday, November 15, to file his certificate of candidacy for the 2022 polls.
“Nais ko po maging action man ng Senado [I want to be a man of action in the Senate],” Roque said.
Roque also filed certificate of candidacy for the Senate in October 2018, but he later withdrew due to health reasons.
This time, he said he would pursue a Senate bid if the President’s daughter also runs. The younger Duterte is now running for vice president.
He later said he is considering a Senate run to clear himself of allegations that he is a war criminal.
On Monday, Roque said his running for the Senate in the 2022 elections shows he has a word of honor.
“Ito po ay paninindigan sa aking sinabi [This is me standing by my word],” he added. — BM, GMA News
