Senatorial aspirant and teacher Balita: It s cops job to ensure school safety

Aksyon Demokratiko senatorial bet and teacher Carlo Balita said on Tuesday that it is the police’s job to secure the safety of the students and teachers, amid photos of uniformed personnel—equipped with their issued firearms—inside Longos Elementary School in Alaminos, Pangasinan during the pilot run of the limited face-to-face classes.

“Hindi naman siguro ang intention is to cause war, to cause panic, or to cause armed conflict doon. Kung the intention is to ensure the safety of the school children, the teachers, and the family, why not? Trabaho din po nila ‘yon,” Balita said at the Pandesal Forum hosted by Kamuning Bakery Cafe.

(I think it is not their intention to cause war, panic, or armed conflict in the school. If their intention is to ensure the safety of the students, teachers, and family, then why not? It is their job to do so.)

Balita said he is yet to release an official position regarding this matter as he will continue to review what really happened there.

He however emphasized that peace education is the key to the many problems of society.

“Peace education should be in the DNA of any curriculum especially in a democracy like ours. Rest assured that I’m a champion of it,” he said.

The Department of Education (DepEd) earlier said in a statement that the presence of uniformed and armed personnel in the school was part of the security detail of a local official who visited it.

It reminded its field officials and school heads to strictly enforce its 2019 order, “National Policy Framework on Learners and Schools as Zones of Peace,” emphasizing that “Schools, as a general rule, should be free from the presence of armed combatants, whether they be from government forces or armed groups. Armed force protection units from government forces, if needed, shall be situated proximate to the school and not inside the school.”

This policy was enacted to help protect students and schools in conflict-stricken areas and ensure that their education will continue despite incidents of armed conflict.

“DepEd shall work together with our stakeholders to ensure that our guidelines on Schools as Zones of Peace, where our learners feel safe, secured, and nurtured, are observed,” DepEd said. — BM, GMA News
