NDRRMC: Reported death toll from Visayas, Mindanao floods now at 17

The reported death toll from the floods and landslides that affected the Visayas and Mindanao on Christmas Day increased to 17, the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) said Tuesday.

In its latest report, the NDRRMC said that of the 17 fatalities, five were in Region 5, two were in Region 8, one was in Region 9, and nine were in Region 10.

However, only two fatalities were validated, while the 15 are still under investigation.

Meanwhile, the number of injured also climbed to eight, while 27 people are currently missing.

A total of 48,358 families or 186,459 persons in 432 barangays in the country were affected by the floods, the agency reported. At least 10,873 families or 46,479 individuals were staying in 105 evacuation centers, while 40 families, equivalent to 157 people, took shelter in places other than the evacuation centers.

The NDRRMC also said 1,112 houses were damaged in MIMAROPA, Region 6, Region 8, Region 9, Region 10, Region 11, CARAGA, and BARMM. Of these, 828 were partially damaged, while 284 were totally damaged.

Four roads and bridges in Region 10 and the Caraga were currently not passable, according to the situation report.

A total of 56 cities and municipalities had power issues, of which 37 had their electricity restored while 19 remained without power. Water supply in three areas were now restored, while one city or municipality still had no running water.

Six domestic flights were canceled due to the rainfall while one seaport remained inoperational. A total of 126 passengers in Region 6 are still stranded in the ports.

Meanwhile, total damage to agriculture was now at P62,691,864 while the damage to infrastructure rose to P20,500,000.

Various incidents related to the serious rainfall were reported in the affected regions. Eight areas remained flooded, one was affected by the monsoon surge, 20 areas were devastated by landslides, six had maritime incidents while one experienced strong winds.

According to the NDRRMC, the government extended P6,184,853.29 worth of assistance to the victims in Region 5, Region 6, Region 8, Region 9 and Caraga.

Several areas in Visayas and Mindanao were flooded on Christmas Day on Sunday due to the effects of the shear line, the weather system formed by the meeting between a cold front and a warmer front.
