Diarrhea outbreak reported in 3 barangays in Tanza, Cavite; two dead

A nine-year-old child an an 11-month old baby died after a diarrhea outbreak was reported in three barangays in Tanza, Cavite last month, a local health official said on Sunday.

The barangays affected by the diarrhea outbreak were Calibuyo, Punta 1, and Sahud Ulan, according to Dr. Ruth Punzalan, municipal health officer of Tanza, Cavite.

Two cases of cholera were also detected, she added.

Twenty diarrhea cases were recorded, Punzalan said. The outbreak started a week before October 19.

“Total of 20 cases ang tinamaan ng diarrhea outbreak at may isa kaming death na 9-year old,” she said on Super Radyo dzBB.

The victim was brought to a hospital for treatment but died the next day due to severe dehydration, she added.

Punzalan said based on their investigation, of seven water sources in Tanza, five were contaminated. These were shallow wells, she said.

The affected communities were given assistance to get access to clean water. —KG, GMA News
