Many people rushed to purchase firecrackers in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, on New Year’s Eve.
According to Lou-Anne Mae Rondina’s report on “24 Oras Weekend” on Saturday, fireworks sales in Barangay Babag are higher than last year.
“Sobrang mabenta talaga, noong una, meron matirang kwitis mga P5,000. Ngayon nauubos na, merong binenta namin galing sa empleyado na kanilang pamasko na kwitis,” said Cherry Pelone, a fireworks vendor.
On Friday, the Lapu-Lapu City Police and Lapu-Lapu City Fire District inspected the stalls and examined the vendors’ permits.
It was also ensured that the stalls had enough water and fire extinguishers, and that no fireworks were being tested.
“So far, sa aming nakita dito, wala naman silang malalaking mga paputok na ipinagbabawal,” said Police Lieutenant Colonel Wilfredo Alarcon Jr., deputy director for operations of Lapu-Lapu City Police Office.
Cebuanos will be treated to a fireworks display at South Road Properties to ring in the New Year at midnight.
Moreover, it will serve as a signal that the Sinulog activities have begun and that Cebu City has recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic. —Sherylin Untalan/VBL, GMA Integrated News
