Isaiah Cacnio’s projection mapping illuminates Comuna Light Festival

In immersive art, space is never just a backdrop — it becomes part of the story.

Manila-based motion graphics artist and multimedia engineer Isaiah Cacnio showed this through his installation art at Comuna, a creative hub in Makati City, Philippines. The art focused on intimacy, technical precision, and a deep sensitivity to community; the work felt tailor-made for the Comuna Light Festival.

Comuna Light Festival is a week-long immersive art experience held from April 10 to 19, 2026. It offers artists a chance to showcase their artistic innovation and celebrate community and connection in a shared space. This year’s event, in particular, features Isaiah’s projection-mapping art called Shared Coordinates.

Shared Coordinates consists of formulas woven together, borrowing concepts from mathematics such as fractals and infinities.

Light conquers fears

Isaiah previously held an exhibit at Art Fair Philippines 2026, but has been sharpening his work since 2020.

What makes Communa Light Festival special for Isaiah is its purpose: building a community. What makes Comuna particularly compelling for the artist is not just the physical space, but the people who inhabit it: the store owners, the tenants, the regular visitors who go there almost every day.

“You meet a lot of people, but it’s more intimate. And the installation’s intent is more intimate. It’s up close.”

While the process of creating the art is already difficult, Isaiah sees his installations at Comuna as more challenging.

“The space is limited. The textures of where you are to project are also, in a way, more complex.”

Isaiah’s body of work consists of formulas woven together, borrowing concepts from mathematics such as fractals and infinities.

Beyond the immediate context of Comuna, Cacnio reflects on the broader impact of light festivals in shaping how audiences engage with art. In a world where public spaces can feel routine — or even unsafe at night — these events offer a renewed sense of wonder.

These shapes aren’t random. They were created deliberately, with intention.

“We grew up not staying up late, and it’s very sketchy outside. At the same time, we often see spaces every day, and we take some of the spaces that we go around for granted,” he said.

The light from projection mapping, then, invites viewers to see darkness differently. It gives life to empty spaces, allowing Isaiah to put a different perspective — not just for him, but also for the people who see it.

“So doing something, reimagining it, throwing a certain twist to it, gives us more interest towards it, or at the same time, just to excite us again, in this world that we are already filled with a lot of darkness in some way or form,” he said. “We need that light; we need to embrace it.”

Comuna Light Festival

Media practitioners and art bloggers were invited to the media preview of Comuna Light Festival.

Through initiatives like “Comuna Talks,” the festival aims to guide artists in exploring how public art builds communities where people can connect, belong, and share their stories.

It convenes creatives from various disciplines — including artists, designers, and food creators — who have turned the Comuna compound into a hub for shared resources.

It also fosters creative exchange among artists with the hope of sparking ideas that can help shape society.

In a city that rarely slows down, the Comuna Light Festival offers a moment of reflection. It reframes everyday spaces into sites of wonder, reminding audiences that even the most routine environments can hold something luminous — if you’re willing to look closely.

Isaiah Cacnio’s projection mapping felt like dancing lights moving fluidly across surfaces as if the space itself were alive.
